Statement on UK-India rice import tariffs

9 May 2025

The UK Rice Association welcomes the fine detail around rice import tariffs in the United Kingdom’s (UK) trade deal with India, which provides a win-win for Indian rice producers and UK rice millers.

Ministers and the negotiation team factored the economic, food security, and food safety contributions of rice milling in the UK into discussions.

Principal among these is the £1 billion contribution to the UK economy every year with 3,100 jobs across 11 rice mills and five rice processing facilities.

In addition, the UK industry provides enhanced food security and food safety, with rice produced specifically to UK food safety standards.

The balanced agreement retains the tariff on milled rice from India alongside concessions on the tariff on husked rice imports.
